Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans

Understanding and Interpreting the Game So You Can Watch it Like a Pro

Tim McCarver with Danny Peary

Two Stars

I only got halfway through this one.

I'm a closet baseball fan. I don't follow any teams but I enjoy watching a game (live, not on TV) now and then. This book looked like it would help me understand the game on a deeper level.

It didn't.

It's written for people who already know an awful lot of terminology. "The slider ... is a breaking ball, similar to the cut fastball but with a harder break. ...the slider's break is horizontal to the ground while the curve's break is vertical to the ground." (In other words, a curve ball doesn't curve, it drops -- like going down a steep slide. But a slider doesn't slide, it curves.)
